The strong relief of the region of Epirus, in conjunction with the relatively high rainfall has contributed to creating a unique hydrographic network, including rivers, ecosystems, areas of high ecological value that they need of effective protection and management.

The Skyros Pony finds its origin in ancient times. Other findings from the Stone- and the Mycenaean  Ages, indicate that horses lived in Greece at all periods of her existence. Even the horses carved in the frieze of the Parthenon are very similar to the Skyros Pony. The survival of the horse on the island continued through the centuries because Skyros is a relatively isolated island.
