crime or disappearance of wildlife

200 experts from 20 countries warn that cats endangered

In a few years the tigers will exist only in books, if the international community does not take steps to ensure their survival. In this bleak conclusion reached by more than 200 experts participating in a conference on the protection of the majestic feline, in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Opening the conference, the Prime Minister of Nepal, Mantchav Kumar Nepal called collective action for the protection of big cats, while cited as major threats to tigers to poaching and destruction of the environment. Hunting tigers and marketing of skin or bone are prohibited by treaty, signatories to 167 countries. And yet, poaching continues as animal parts used by traditional medicine and aphrodisiacs manufacture products while skin animal can be sold at prices starting at a thousand dollars and may exceed ten thousand.

“The illegal wildlife trade is estimated at around $ 10 billion a year in Asia, that is the second most important trade after arms and drug trafficking,” he said in a videotaped message, World Bank President Robert Zoellick.

The population of adult tigers living in the protected areas of Nepal yplogizetai to 121 animals. Projected to create another protected area, national park Bardot, 450 km west of Nepal.
