and Spartan democracies, the roman and byzantine years, a short Turkish occupation, the occupation by the French and the British, the unification with the mainland, the Italian first- and the German occupation during the second war. Historical traces and monuments can be seen all over the island although the destructive earthquake that hit the Ionian islands in 1953, was the most destructive ever in Greece.

After the earthquake, the island was left in ruins, so all villages were completely re-built. The less damaged part of Kefalonia was the northern one that has resisted the strong earthquakes that devastated the rest of the island.  The well-known village of Fiskardo in the north end of the island has been declared a ‘preserved area’ as many of the traditional buildings are preserved and show the traditional architectural of the island before it was destroyed. Because of its traditional beauty, Fiskardo is a cosmopolitan place visited by hundreds of tourists and VIPs.
In Argostoli, the capital of the island, there is a number of points of interest as  the Archaeological Museum, that  houses interesting archaeological finds from the Mycenaean, the Hellenistic and the Roman periods.

Kefalonia Island  is also famous for a number of high quality products internationally recognized such as the  white wine  “Robola” produced by a local variety of grapes,  famous for its fine taste and special aroma. The local cheese manufacturers produce some of the most tasteful cheeses .  Among the famous products of Kefalonia  Island is also the thyme honey.
